Esperanza, the young narrator (who does not introduce herself at first), explains how her family moved around a lot before coming to alive on Mango Street. There are six members of the family unit – Esperanza, her Mama and Papa, her younger sister Nenny, and her younger brothers Carlos and Kiki. They moved out of their terminal apartment because the pipes broke and the landlord wouldn't fix them.
Cisneros introduces her narrative fashion in this first department – short capacity that as well act equally private vignettes or prose poems. Esperanza does not innovate herself yet, as she is still constructing a name and identity for herself, and for now her story is more most her observations and memories.
The family unit had always dreamed of owning their own business firm, a white firm with lots of rooms and trees in the yard, but the firm on Mango Street is pocket-size and falling apart. It is withal an improvement over their before residences, though, equally at least they own the firm and so don't take to deal with landlords. At their old apartment a nun from Esperanza'due south school had seen Esperanza playing out front end and made her feel ashamed of where she lived.
The dream of a better, more beautiful, and more than autonomous house will deport on throughout the book – Esperanza and her family and neighbors are always hoping and dreaming of something meliorate. The nun's comment is the first example of society shaming Esperanza for her race and grade.
Esperanza's parents assure her that the house on Mango Street is only temporary, but Esperanza doubts their discussion. She still clings to the dream of having her own house, one she can be proud of, and she remains dissatisfied with the business firm on Mango Street.
Office of Esperanza clinging to the dream of her own business firm involves feeling like she doesn't belong on Mango Street. For now she will purposefully try to keep this neighborhood out of her identity.
